I love a good writing Challenge. Here’s one that was fun: “How would you write a short story that’s only a conversation between two people?”
Brownie, the Worm
“Hi Will. Hey, buddy, why are you sad?”
“Hi Daddy. (sniffle) I’m sad ‘cuz Jeffy was here today.”
“Your friend, Jeffy, from school?”
“Uh huh, but he’s NOT my friend anymore.”
“Will, did you and Jeffy have an argument?”
“Well, sorta. I don’t like him anymore.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
(hugging him)
“Uh huh. I mean huh uh, (sniff) I don’t want to.”
“Okay. Will, just tell me, did Jeffy hurt you?”
“No, Daddy, he didn’t hurt me.”
(sniffle)
“Good. I’m glad he didn’t. That makes me feel better.”
“But Jeffie, (sniffle) did something really bad and I don’t like him. I showed him the worm I found. I named him and everything. He’s Brownie and he’s my friend.”
(wipes nose on shirt)
“It’s good to have a tiny friend.”
(crying)
“But I don’t have Brownie anymore. Jeffy squished him. I told Jeffy, ‘You can’t squeeze a worm, it will die’, but he didn’t listen!”
(sniffle)
“Will, that IS sad. I would probably cry, too.”
“You would? You would cry, too?”
“Sure I would. It’s always sad when someone, or something, we care about is gone. We miss them and we’re sad, because we care.”
“Thank you, Daddy.”
“You’re welcome, Will. I love you, li’l buddy.”
“I love you, too.”

CJ , Well done - a great example of showing instead of telling about parenting. D
What a great dad and a sweet little boy I felt like I was in the room there with them. Made the child within me. Wish I had had a family like that.
