Elderly people are not the enemy, or the problem. We aren’t doddering old fools that walk too slow and enjoy getting in everyone’s way just to piss them off. We’ve learned how to be strong and resilient; when to stay silent and when we should speak our minds.
We’ve lived through pain and loss you can’t even imagine and come out on the other side, or we wouldn’t still be here. If we’re real old, we give some credence to the saying: “Only the strong survive”.
Think of all the experiences the elders of us must have had over our lifetime. We’ve amassed a wealth of stories, advice, and problem-solving techniques we would gladly share, if you’ll only ask us.
We’re no stranger to problems. We’ve tucked away at least one answer to a lot of different problems. You could be facing a few right now that you need help with.
We’ve probably got answers for things you wonder about in a “been there, done that” sort of way. Ask us. If you don’t get an answer you can use, you’ve at least established a rapport with a new friend. Who knows, maybe next time our advice will be spot on.
I guess what I’m really saying is, I just don’t understand this growing preoccupation society has with seniors and elderly people. We are just YOU with a few more chapters in our book …
But over and above problem-solving and whether or not we’re getting in people’s way, all of us are capable of so much more and it’s all positive. We seniors are the Grandpa and Grandma you adored as children. We give the best hugs since hugs were invented, and we’ve heard a trillion and two secrets that —-as promised, we’ve never ever told.
I remember all the fun I had with mine. Grandma always told us the word “love” was invented for grandparents so they could give it to us grandkids … with a chocolate chip cookie, of course.
