I loved reading bedtime stories to my three daughters, almost as much as they loved hearing me read to them. I think it helped them put away their busy thoughts of the day and sent them into a calm and pleasant dream world.
One night when they were deciding on a book, one of my girls said they were tired of their books. She asked if I would make up a bedtime story for them. The other two thought that was a great idea, so I took up the gauntlet.
Making up a bedtime story came easy, partially because I used a favorite stuffed bedtime friend from each of them as the main characters in the story. It was fun, because each time I told it, I made up a little more of the story until it finally felt finished.
My daughters especially loved hearing a repetitive sentence every so often in each story. I did that with both of them:
“Now, I told you that so I could tell you this …” from “The Little Umbrella”.
“I know this is true because someone who’s been there told me to tell you.” from “The Magic Banana”.
At that point, they alternated between having a Momma’s story for bedtime, or a favorite book story. We ended up with two new made up bedtime stories.
One day, I would love to get them published for my girls, but also for bedtime stories for other parents to read to their children.
