Being Alone is Never Easy
Flash Fiction, by C.J. Heck
Pinky woke up terrified. She just realized, she was alone, completely, totally alone, and that never happens. They’ve never been apart.
“We’ve been together almost forever.” Pinky told the authorities. “I love him, sir. Please find my partner. I don’t know what I’ll do without him –-he’s my whole world. We belong together.”
The officer told Pinky, “Don’t you worry. We have several places we can search and nine times out of ten, that’s where we’ll find him. Just you watch, he’ll be safe and sound and anxious to get back home to you.”
“Oh I hope so! We have to be somewhere important Friday night. Officer, please understand, I can’t go without him –-there are people who depend on us.”
Two days passed and the officer had exhausted every possibility of locating Pinky’s partner. He was hesitant to make the call –-it was never easy. He hated breaking bad news. He decided to go over there and tell her in person.
Pinky answered the door. “Hello, Sir. I’m sad, but everything is okay. The people we work for found him and brought him home –-he’s beyond any help though, all covered in bright red blotches. You know what that means …
With a full apology, they paired me with someone who’s also alone. He will be hard to get used to, but I can try to make it work.”
“Good luck, Ma’am. Being a SOCK is a tough job —-being a pink one, nearly impossible. I couldn’t do it …”
