Heard on a Porch Swing
“Daddy?”
“What, Punkin’?”
“Will you and Mommy live forever? Please?”
(creak)
(creak)
“Honey, no one can do that. Everyone has a lifetime and they’re supposed to end someday.”
(creak)
(creak)
“But … if you go to heaven, does the love go there, too?”
(creak)
(creak)
“No, Sweetie. It’s right here. (pats child’s chest) Love lives right in here … and it will live there forever.”
(creak)
(creak)
“How can it, Daddy? If you’re in heaven, you can’t say you love me.”
(creak)
(creak)
“Every time you think of Mommy and me, you’ll feel our love. Even if you think about today on this creaky old porch swing, you’ll feel our love.”
(gives a hug, child giggles)
(creak)
(creak)
“Understand, Punkin’? Love never dies. It lives on and on and on.”
(creak)
(creak)
“Daddy, I think I do.”
(creak)
(creak)
(creak)
“Time for bed, sweet girl … oh, and bring your love with you.”
(giggle - giggle)

It's not simply an emotion. It must be nurtured and also it must be given. Without these two things love can wither and die. Love cannot exist by itself. You have to share it or it'll go stale.
Such a sweet read, C.J!
