Jake and the "sit-choo-way-shun"
What happens when you add extra curiosity to a three year-old
Q: What is a favorite story from long ago?
This was over twenty years ago when a grandson (I’ll call him Jake), was three. I lived in New Hampshire and my daughter called mid-afternoon from her home in North Carolina. Her calling me wasn’t strange, but she was laughing so hard, I could hardly understand a word she said. That was strange.
“Mom, you won’t … you’re never gonna … you just won’t believe this.”
(laughing)
“What happened, honey? Is everyone okay?”
“Yeah, yeah … oh Mom, yeah, everyone is fine. It’s something Jake did … and you won’t … you’re not gonna believe it.”
(she’s still laughing)
“Try me, honey … I’ll believe most anything Jake did. Jake is already ‘family-famous’ for his cute antics.”
“No … no, I mean you won’t believe THIS … it was naptime. I read him a story; put a music CD in his little CD player; tucked him in and came downstairs where I had been folding clothes from the dryer.
Fifteen minutes later, he yelled for me from upstairs …”
“Momm-eee! Come here, Momm-eee. We have a PROB-lem.”
“Jake! You’re supposed to be asleep, young man. I suggest you hop to it.”
“Mom-eee! We have a sit-choo-way-shun. You hafta come here and help me. NOW.”
(laughing)
“Mom, I was thinking NOW what? I was all ready to act upset, but when I went into his room, he had the covers pulled up around his shoulders and he was crying.”
“Momm-eee, don’t be mad. I just wanted to see what it would be like and would it fit. I didn’t know it would get stuck.”
“Jake? WHAT-DID-YOU-DO?”
“Mom, he pushed the covers down and pointed … there was a CD in his lap … and his ‘little guy’ was sticking through the hole, out the other side, and turning purple. It was stuck. At that point, I didn’t know whether to laugh, or cry.
I told him to sit still and I would be right back. I ran to the refrigerator and got a stick of butter. We greased it up and it slid right out. Do you believe he would DO that?”
“Honey, knowing Jake and how ornery he is, yeah, I believe it –-I also know he’s a brilliant little boy and he’s always been curious. Something tells me, you’ll have your hands full with Jake.”
I’m just glad she didn’t have to take him to the Emergency Room ...
