It’s no secret to people that know me. I love words, word games, and anything else that has to do with words.
Something I really enjoy is playing with words through figurative language like oxymorons, similes, metaphors, and especially personification. It’s fun for me to attach human characteristics to the non-human being.
This morning, as I was having coffee in a pretty mug I got for Christmas, I was thinking about Christmas and just for shits and grins, I wondered … what if Christmas suddenly went < p o o f > and morphed into a person? What sort of person would Christmas be?
This is going to be interesting —personification can be so much fun.
Christmas already represents different things to people all over the world. How people celebrate it is different everywhere, too. So, Christmas as a person would have to continue to satisfy everyone.
To most, Christmas is an annual home and family standard: chestnuts roasting; a fire in a fireplace; stockings on the mantle; a decorated tree; caroling; reading “The Night Before Christmas”, and of course, Love.
To children, Christmas is all WOW and WONDER. We’ve got elves making toys; a jolly fat man in a red suit; a sleigh that flies with reindeer, and if they’re good, Santa brings presents.
To the elite, Christmas equals status; the tree and all the gifts under it stand for wealth and entitlement; beliefs and pretenses all lie elsewhere; the climb to wherever they’re going in life is what’s most important.
To many others, Christmas is the holiest of holidays; it’s a time to give thanks; it’s a day to celebrate the birth of Christ, maybe with anonymous gifting after a morning spent in church.
For far too many, Christmas is sad and tearful; there’s no money for food, or presents and Santa has never crossed their threshold.
To retailers, Christmas means a solid bottom line; each year they hope for more growth and a total that’s even bigger.
Addressing all of that would take a skill set nothing short of magic. I think If Christmas were to suddenly become a person and get everything right for everyone, the only thing Christmas could be …
… is a magician.
