Hmmm … I guarantee the rural West learned proper English grammar from the same textbooks the rest of the country was taught from.
Good grammar has got to be reinforced and bad grammar corrected at home and if Mom and Dad and, before them, Gram and Grampa, all said, “Where’s he at?”, good grammar was not going to go forward ...
I equate this with the word, “ain’t”. It was misused so much, for so many years, that eventually it was begrudgingly accepted. Even good ol’ Webster added it to his dictionary and called it colloquial.
I think the grammar sticklers (of which I am a member) will continue to drop the “at” and ignore “ain’t” forever … (wink)
I remember when I was in high school, we had a name for fast dancing. We called it “trucking”.
The city had one road with several mean pot holes and people were complaining, especially delivery truck drivers, and I assume the city had no funds to fix it. They put up a sign at either end that said, “No heavy trucking.”
We high school kids got a huge kick out of the sign! Anytime we spotted it, we mocked it by fake heavy dancing until we were past the sign!
dirt🙄
What’s dirt?
@C.J. Heck
I just can't s👀m to find any!🩷
No Pet Peeves? You are in the minority.
Ohhhh, you mean you don’t have any Pet Peeves?
You’re very lucky, Seer. 💕😊
It drives me nuts when someone tries to talk with food in their mouth. A close second is chewing with the mouth open.
Yes, those are also on my list, Tom, but further down, not Pets. Thank you for sharing a couple of yours!
I've always thought of that as colloquial. Some rural people in the West talk like that. Where's he at? Out'n the barn.

Thanks, Sue!
💕😊❤️😊
You wouldn't like the way English is spoken in Newfoundland (Canada) then- one of their regular greeting phrases is "What are ya at?"
Oh No! I would spend my days with my shoulders scrunched up in a perpetual cringe! 🤣😁😂
Their dialect is…interesting, to say the least. I put that up to them existing independently before they joined Canada in 1949.
I didn’t know that — I learned something new today. Thank you, David.
“Awesome”
“It’s like, I mean…”
And the phrase, “well, I’m just not sure” trotted out when decisions need to be made.
Those are all good examples, David! Those do get old!
I have a similar one, but in French, so there's not much point in telling you! If I think of something in English I'll come back :)
That would be fine, Cesca.
Errors in grammar or punctuation on a sign. There is a NO SEMI'S sign in a local parking lot that makes me grind my teeth every time I see it.
That’s a good one, Morning Musing!
