What Makes Someone a Poet?
To answer, you have to delve deep into a person who writes poetry. They’re different. They may have always been different. Their distinct writing defines them through colorful imagery, language and rhythm.
A poet is an artist who uses words to paint what only they can see and feel. They discover life deeper and with open hearts, their feelings become shifting shades of even more pure feeling. Then they write to share what they see with those who cannot.
A poet can further be defined by their unique perspective on life, or even a tiny particle of that life. They write with a trained eye for beauty only they can see with an innate ability to touch the hearts of some, arouse the deepest feelings in others, but to always tease the imaginings of the many.
Poetry explores the very depths of human emotion, both positive and negative. A poet is adept at capturing those feelings and writing them to life.
This is a poem that defines who I am …
Anatomy of a Poet by C.J. Heck Go in through the eyes of a poet, deep into her alphabet mind. Ideas like flotsam and jetsam dodge poetry fragments and lines. Beware the dark shadows of memory, knife-sharp and bloodied by time, or gentle, orgasmic and sensual, swirling eddies, some without rhyme. Softly notice the spirit in hiding. Tiptoe past the bruised heart mending there, knitting poems, pearls strung on a necklace, unfinished jewels everywhere. Take note on your tour of this poet, the outside no different, you see, but inside, my God, a passion abyss, the poet, the woman, the me. [The title poem for the book, "Anatomy of a Poet", by C.J. Heck]

C.J., oh how you so effortlessly capture the depth of feeling of a poet’s mind in so few words. I see you. I see myself. And I feel less alone in the shades of light and darkness I reside in. Thank you!
Thanks for this beautiful poem that defines you.
