Flying, Pirates, and Never Aging
A significant event that changed the course of my life ...
There was one childhood event significant enough to change the course of my life. It was a common thread woven throughout my childhood and to a lesser degree, still surprises me sometimes in my Golden Years.
It began with an introduction to the book, Peter Pan, when Mama read it to me the very first time. I still remember drifting off to sleep having made up my mind. Like Peter, I was going to fly and never grow up. Someday, I would join him in Neverland and fight pirates with him along with the Lost Boys.
The many questions I had about the world followed me through childhood as I searched for answers. I never consciously lost sight of Neverland or my dream of flying ---even after I jumped off a bookcase trying and ended up with six new stitches in my eyebrow.
Then when my three children and later, my eleven grandchildren came along asking the same questions, I discovered I enjoyed sharing the answers I found. I further shared by writing poetry for children and later, through my three books for children from a child’s point of view.
I guess it could be said, my life was shaped by the love of a simple children’s book that teased me with a desire to fly and stay young forever.
By learning it was only pretend and it would always remain a dream, I began writing for children.  My inner child had found a way I wouldn’t ever have to grow up ...
I finally satisfied my dream of flying when I became a TWA flight attendant in the 70s, but I still enjoy a fascination with pirates …

Wonderful that you became a flight attendant! I grew up loving airplanes and have never really satisfied my desires. Except, I work for NASA.
I work as a high-energy particle astrophysicist.I love my work and indeed have decided not to retire as long as I have unfinished projects or plans even though I am 73. I fly instruments on stratospheric balloons and rarely in space. I enjoy the flying connection but I yearn for airplanes. I think I finally have leisure and money enough for flying lessons and plan to start as soon as I have medical clearance. I want to pursue a regular
Private Pilot license, but I have two major black marks, a heart attack and a stroke. Both are treated and stable and I will try for aFAA waiver. If unsuccessful, I will go for a Sport Pilot license that only requires a valid driver’s license, which I have. I might also pursue a glider license that does not require medical if I can find a nearby school. The Sport Pilot license has limitations but I accept that. It would allow me to fly.
