My dog go hit by a car when I was a child. That was horrific enough for a child but to see someone shoot your dog after it was hit, man, how frightening!
I’m sorry you also had a dog hit by a car as a child. You’re right, it’s horrific. I wanted to hurt Mr. B for shooting my dog. I wanted to kick and hit and throw rocks at him! (I’m glad I got past that).
I’m sure the police officer lit into him and I remember the neighbors were all angry, too. He probably paid a dear price for what he did that day.
I can absolutely understand that. I feel that way about my neighbor's dog and one of my sons, and his family, have a dog named Harold. (Note: Lots of hair, lots of dander! LOL).
I hope those two men and their behavior wasn't an indication of the town's general attitude. For instance, after Mr. Bremer shot your dog, did the neighbors doo anything about him? What did they say? Were they shocked and angry, or complacent and standing around gawking, waiting for more of the circus to continue? Town's have personalities, just like people. I'm sorry you had to go through such an awful experience, especially when you were so young. I'll bet you had nightmares for a long time.
Sue, about all I know and remember, I wrote already. I was only 6 and that was 70 years ago now. Mama took me home shortly after Mr. B shot Max —I was sobbing and yes, I did have nightmares for quite awhile.
As to the town’s personality, I have no idea. Mama and Daddy are gone now, so I can’t ask them.
C.J. that's a terrible and tragic story. I'm so sorry that you had to live through that as a child. That idiot with the gun was one of those people who seizes a moment to play God. I hope that he did more than sit in the police car and talk to the police. I hope he got arrested on charges of taking a life and shooting off a gun against town ordinances. At the very least he should have lost the gun and be charged a hefty fine to be paid to your family.
Thank you for your thoughts, Sandy. I agree with you. I wish I knew what happened after Mama and I went home. Unfortunately, that was nearly 70 years ago and both my parents are gone now, too, so there’s no way to find out.
Thank you for the hug, Sandy. No one can ever have enough hugs! They go so nicely with whatever your wearing, have no calories, aren’t alcoholic, but they sure as shooting are addictive! Long live the HUG!
Yes, I’ve had many, many dogs since then, thanks for asking, Sandy. That was 70 years ago when I was 6 … I’ll be 76 in August. WOW, that even surprises ME!
We will have another new month tomorrow … I hope yours is spectacular, my friend.
76! YOu're a kid. I'm 78. I have loved dogs all my life, but nature played a littkle trick on me. I'm allergic. It has never stopped me from playing with a relative or neighbor's dog. Then I have to run home, take a shower, and put topical allergy cream wherever I'm itchy, blotcty or about to have hives.
Allergic to dogs? Oh NOooooo! I’m so sorry, Sandy! One of my grandsons was recently tested and he has a lot of allergies. One of his worst is for dog and cat dander.
When we had our chihuahua, Nova Marie (Ree-Ree), there for her annual rabies shot, I asked if he knew how bad chihuahuas are with humans and their allergic reactions. He said chihuahuas are known to be hypoallergenic —that’s the type of dog he suggests for those who are allergic to pet dander.
Food for thought, Sandy! Ree-Ree is our second Chihuahua. That’s our favorite breed now. Our first one, Toby, set that in stone for us. Smart, faithful, loving and we were so sad when at 15, we had to have him put down for heart failure.
C.J., have you had other dogs since? My wife had a similar experience. Her family came home to find their German Shepherd had been shot and they could not save him. Years later, she had an idea for a book on pet loss. We interviewed over 100 people. If you would like a copy, I can send you one as a gift.
You’re very kind to offer, Harley, but it’s not necessary. It wasn’t too long after that when Daddy came home with a little tail peeking through the snaps on his jacket. He had brought home another dog for us to love and we did.
Since that time I have had many dogs —we usually adopted them from the shelters, some were very young, some were seniors. We just went to look and naturally fell in love —one would make itself known.
The dog could have been taken to the vet. He might have been able to save Max, if not the vet could have put the dog to sleep! I hope that man was arrested and kept in jail! The action he took was cruelty to animals!
I agree, Connie. I remember Max wagging his tail and I’m sure the vet would have been able to do something. I wish my father was still around to ask if the guy got in trouble.
🙏🐕🌈🌁 For Max
Thank you, Ken!

Very sad. Very, very, traumatic.
Yes, Carol, it was a very bad day. Thank you for reading and for your comment.
Oh I’m so sorry for lil’ Catherine!
You are so sweet, Wen. Thank you. It was my introduction to people of “the Dark Side”.
Super helpful comments on chihuahuas. Now, I have to see if my wife is up for adopting one. I would love to finally have a dog.
That would be good for both of you —it keeps the heart open to have “someone” to love and take care of, like having a child again.

So so very sad
It was. Thank you, Kathleen

Well, I'm sending you a virtual hug, because nothing like that should happen to a child. Did you ever get another dog?
Thank you for the hug, Sandy. No one can ever have enough hugs! They go so nicely with whatever your wearing, have no calories, aren’t alcoholic, but they sure as shooting are addictive! Long live the HUG!

You're right. One of our neighbors has a chihuahua named Trixie. She is the one day I can snuggle and not have an allergic reation.

Thank you for the restack!
CJ, I can only imagine the depth of that scar. Here is to you and to Max. D
Thank you, Dave.

Max’s memory is a blessing 💜🐾🐾
Yes, it was. Thanks, Heidi.
