Could it be that Christmas is becoming an “over” time? We over-spend, over-eat, over-party, and end up trying to fit God --the reason there IS Christmas --in between our over-abundant holiday schedules and over-long gift lists. Even the mall stores want a bottom line over what it was last year
It seems the only thing we don’t over-do on, but should, is helping the less fortunate by dropping a few extra coins in the bucket when we see Santa’s helpers ringing bells all over town.
Please don’t misunderstand. Anyone who knows me, knows Christmas is my favorite time of year. I get swept up in the nostalgia and I get the warm and fuzzies just thinking about the holidays -—I can’t help myself.
I especially love all of the the once a year traditional favorites: decorated cookies, decorating the Christmas tree, egg nog, hot chocolate with marshmallows, wrapping gifts, and leisurely driving through the community to see the outside Christmas decorations.
Plus, right about now, we start watching our favorite Christmas movies:
“The Gathering” with Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton.
“Miracle on 34th Street"
“The Polar Express”
“Holiday Inn”
“Home for Christmas” with Micky Rooney
“A Christmas Story” with Darren McGavin.
“Elf” for pure fun
Chevy Chase in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”.
“The Christmas Card” with Ed Asner
The original “Christmas in Connecticut”. It’s just better.
We all love Jimmy Stewart in “It‘s a Wonderful Life”.
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”.
“The Bishop’s Wife”
We’ve found enough “Scrooge” movies to entertain us for a week.
This year, we’re going to try harder to celebrate Christmas for it’s true meaning. We’ll focus our ‘over’ time on the people we care most about and who care about us, and help those who have never had a visit from Santa Claus.
Oh, and the ONLY bottom line I’m concerned with is the one I sit on and I don’t want that one to get any bigger ...

You know, I thought it was just me and my miserable self. To many things seem to have become “just another day”. I keep thinking it’s just age. I keep wondering if it’s so many people being gone and so many of the old traditions departing with them. The commercialization seems to have been there for quite awhile, but when Christmas decorations and merchandise find their way into stores in October, well that sums that up. And perhaps most sadly, people (society) in general, well, they’ve become outright cruel, mean and nasty. Hard to be festive with so many around like that.
Dave said it correct above. “Just growing into a new view of life”.
I think you could write a book on all of it. You probably hit it on the head and have the right idea on what your focus will be this time around.
Maybe just maybe I should be trying to find something this year that makes it seem a little bit more worthwhile and in the spirit of what the holiday is suppose to mean. If it happens, you’ll be the first to know.
I loved reading this. I agree with the overwhelming it can bring. Getting it just right. It shouldn’t be work. Christmas of old just unfolded or maybe that because I was not a mother and head cook and bottle washer.
