Have you ever had a song stuck in your mind so deeply that it played and entertained you all day, or even longer? I’m sure you have, most of us have.
Mine was a song I had heard before, but I didn’t know the title, only that it was French and I couldn’t understand a single word. From the very first, it became a favorite, in spite of being in a language I don’t speak.
Then a couple of years ago, Robert and I watched a Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton movie called, “Something’s Gotta Give”. It instantly became one of my favorite romantic comedies.
For one thing, I could relate to so many things in the movie. Diane’s character is a writer, a playwright, and often unable to sleep, she writes well into the night. That’s like me.
Nicholson plays an aging, womanizing bachelor, 63, never married, who never dates women his own age. He only dates women thirty and younger.
He and Keaton accidently meet when he dates Keaton’s daughter, has a minor heart attack, and has to stay at her mother’s beach home to recuperate. Once he’s on the mend, he and Keaton spend one wild night in bed together.
The humor peppered all through the movie was perfectly placed as he fights falling in love with Keaton, surprised he was even interested in a woman his own age.
It turns out that the theme song from the movie is the French favorite, the very one I spoke of, that stuck in my mind and entertained me for hours. I learned the title is “La Vie En Rose”. It’s so beautiful and I found myself again humming the song for days.
I thought the lyrics must be lovely to go with such a romantic melody, so I looked them up online.
La vie en Rose
English Lyrics
Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me heaven sighs
And tho I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose.
When you press me to your heart
I'm in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak, angels sing from above
Everyday words seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be la vie en rose.
Just as I thought, the words are lovely –in English or in French. Now I welcome those times even more when the notes stick in my mind and entertain me. That song can stay as long as it wants …

La Vie En Rose, sung by Jack Nicholson at the end of the movie. His voice is full of emotion as he realizes he is in love with Keaton and he realizes he will probably never see her again.
The movie is very real with honest situations and the humor is perfect.

There is a movie- La Vie En Rose. Terrific movie, but not a love story. It’s about the song and the singer’s life.
I love this.... thanks.
It's such a sweet film.
I'm reminded of Kevin Kline singing "Somewhere" (in French of course) at the end of French Kiss.
