Growing up in Ohio, I loved winter almost as much as I loved summer. There were so many things my five siblings and I loved to do outside and every one of them always brought great fun.
Later, when we were done skating, or sledding (and cold as cherry Popsicles), we walked home high with anticipation. We knew Mama would have steaming bowls of chili and buttered cornbread waiting for us in the kitchen when we got home.Â
All winter long, she made a huge pot of chili nearly every Friday for the weekend. We all loved chili. For that reason alone, we would have gladly welcomed snow and winter.
The first snow always amazed me. Watching those tiny delicate snowflakes falling I couldn’t help marveling at the enormous number of snowflakes that would have to come down, pile up, and stick together to make enough snow for our winter fun.
This children’s poem is dedicated to snowflakes —as usual, from a child’s point of view.
Ode to a Tiny Snowflake
by C.J. Heck
Hi there, tiny snowflake.
Did you bring your friends?
Will I see a lot of you
before the morning ends?
I love it when you visit me
and you all fall down together.
I dress up to play with you,
toasty warm in cold, cold weather.
It’s great the way you all pile up
out in my back yard
and I can roll you into balls
for a snowman, it's not hard.
Or maybe, I will build a fort.
My friends will come and play,
and if you plan to stay awhile,
we'll come outside every day.
Sometimes we make snow angels
and their arms and legs look puffy,
but we can do that ONLY IF
you come down light and fluffy.
Could I ask you guys a favor?
White is nice, but nothing's duller …
Could you all please, just one time,
come down in LOTS of colors?
Here’s one more winter poem that will take you back to childhood. It’s also from a child’s point of view … my favorite way to write.
My Snowman
by C.J. Heck
The snow was flaking all around
and gently piling on the ground.
Such tiny puffs, all floating free,
yet stuck together, I could see,
it's like one voice that's singing for us,
or a lot, like in a chorus.
I rolled some up and stacked it high
and I made a happy snowman guy.
I'm glad it's that way, just with snow
and that's not how we children grow,
'cause on a warm and sunny day,
my snowman slowly melts away.
As he melts, he gets so thin.
I wish, like me, that he had skin.

Aahhh, C. J., you have taken me back to my childhood in Montana. Will be starring this one in my email to continue to visit through the winter season (Texas has a couple weeks of cold and ice, rarely the snow of joy-filled childhood memories). Happy WINTER season to you! Many blessings and MUCH LOVE, ~Wendy💜
I really enjoy your poems and stories, C.J. The poems almost made me look forward to the snow in the forecast in a few days. Almost. :)
